CEATEC JAPAN 2016 Presence of display decreases greatly by influence of IoT boom

October 4 - 7, gCEATEC JAPAN 2016h was convenced in Makuhari Messe. Recently, its presence was down because of decrease of electronics exhibitors. In this time, number of exhibitors increases. Also, main theme is changed compared to the past. In fact, car electronics, robot, and IoT were easy to notice. In such a condition, presence of display was greatly down. Some electronics makers did not exhibit display products. In this article, topics of display are picked up daringly.

In display category, Sharp specialized only in IGZO-TFT-LCD, and flaunted extensive products lineup. The flagship model is 27 inch 8K monitor which is corresponded to HDR (High Dynamic Range). Superior high contrast ratio is realized by 326 ppi high resolution and local dimming technology with approximate 200 LEDs.

The company appealed free-form display. Concretely, diameter 2.5 inch circle type (824 ~ 824 pixel), diameter 4.5 inch elliptical type (1280 ~ 720 pixel), and corner R type (5.2 inch full-HD) are exhibited. It's possible to realize a smartphone with smooth form by using this corner R display. In short, smartphone can be differentiated compared to the conventional rectangular model. As you know, these free-form types are realized by specification of IGZO-TFT, because it's possible to build in driver-circuits on the TFT glass substrate.

Possibility of sheet-type display shows by tiling type 130 inch OLED

On the other hand, JEITA appealed 8K Super Hi-Vision broadcasting extensively, and exhibited 130 inch OLED with tiling technology for sheet-type display as a new prototype. To demo future's TV, this prototype was produced by collaboration of LG Display, NHK, and ASTRODESIGN. OLED was considered to be a type of white OLED + color filter. However, it's confirmed again that OLED was superior to LCD because of ultra-high contrast ratio based on self-emission mechanism. Also, as the picture 6, its thickness was a few o only. Of course, this tiling type display may not be accepted to the consumer market directly, however, indication of potential of sheet-type display was effective for demonstration.

Futaba appeals flexible OLED

Also, Futaba Corporation exhibited flexible passive-matrix OLEDs using a plastic film substrate mainly. Concretely, 0.7 inch (128 ~ 80 pixel), 1.1 inch (128 ~ 36 pixel) monochrome panel and 1.4 inch (128 ~ 16 pixel) full-color panel were displayed. They are assembled panel by solid encapsulation using 2 films. Thickness was only 0.3 o and flexible property was R 400o.
